Our 3D/2N package at g hotel includes a free 2 hour trishaw ride around Georgetown visiting heritage buildings.
The trishaw ride did not start from g-hotel as this hotel is quite far from the places we were visiting. Instead a travel agent affiliated to the hotel came to pick us up at 9.30am to sent us to the trishaw centre where our tour started.
This is 'Uncle', our trishaw pedlar. We thought he was too old and fragile to ride us around but we were wrong as he was pretty strong having been in this trade for many decades.
I realised from this experience that the trishaw is one of the best ways to see places if they are not too far from each other. The very slow ride is good as it is hard to miss anything while providing ample opportunities to snap candid shots.
We visited The Pinang Peranakan Mansion which was built at the end of the 19th century. This mansion which used to be the home of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee showcase more than 1000 antiques and collectibles depicting the life of the Peranakan or the Babas and Nyonyas as they are locally known.
Beatiful carvings with intricate designs can really "wow" anyone visiting this building.
Visiting Hours : Everyday including public holidays from 9.30am to 5pm
Entrance Fee : RM10 per head.
Another heritage building we visited is Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion which is also known as The "Blue Mansion ". This place was formerly home to a tycoon, Cheong Fatt Tze and has now become a popular shooting site for film-making. The 38 room-mansion is also available for homestay with rates ranging RM420 to RM800 per night.
This is Fort Cornwallis. It was built when Captain Francis Light first landed in Penang. There is nothing much left to see here and you can skip this place actually. The entrance fee is RM2/head
Built in 1897, The Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower was contributed by a local millionaire, Cheah Chen Eok, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. It stands 60ft-high, with each foot representing a year of the Queen’s 60-year reign.
This place is called Little India. This is where early Indian immigrants settled down to make Penang their home. It is the island's epicentre of Indian music, savoury cuisine, exotic spices and authentic Indian goods.
This is Masjid Kapitan Keling. Founded in 1801, it is the largest historic mosque in Georgetown.
The trishaw also stopped at Kuan Yin Temple which is the oldest temple in Penang.
Even though I stayed in Penang for 5 years I haven't been to some of these places. There are lots more exciting places to explore in Penang and if you are planning a trip here, do try the trishaw tour.
