The South Park Cemetery which is located off the busy Park Street is an interesting place to visit in Kolkata. Walking around this cemetery is like taking a walk through history as the tombs here are old and gothic displaying epitaphs of European men and women who once lived but died in a land far from their home.
Established in 1767 and comprising about 1600 tombs, this cemetery is now a heritage site managed by The Association For The Preservation Of Historical Cemeteries In India. A donation is collected at the entrance and a booklet with a write-up of the cemetery is given in exchange.
The cemetery has numerous pathways set in the midst of abundant foliage and trees.
Among the interesting professions mentioned in the epitaphs are cattle breeders, jail keeper, silversmith, school teacher, architect, translator, surgeon, postmaster, etc.
The mausoleums and monuments built around the tomb comes in different sizes, shapes and designs.
