I knew there's a place called Mauritius but that was about all I knew about Mauritius, full stop. I didn't know exactly where Mauritius lies on the globe, what its people look like, what they speak and what this place is famous for. It was really a land of intrigue to me before I made the trip.
About Mauritius
Mauritius or formally known as The Republic Of Mauritius is a sovereign nation with its own government and constitution. It is made up of a few tiny islands which are not even noticeable on the globe above. One of its islands called Mauritius Island is where its capital city is located. This island where I spent a short stint also houses the main commercial and administrative activities of the nation. Mauritius belongs to the African Continent.
The People
The people of Mauritius are dark skinned. Many look like Indian while some look like Polynesian. Most can speak English but the main language is the Mauritian Creole and French which are quite similar to each other. The ladies wear saris for functions and a big number are Hindus.
The people are generally friendly. They easily strike a conversation with you and don't mind being photographed.
The lifestyle appeared laid back, with many picnicking and camping by the beach.
The Scenery
I didn't have the opportunity to visit Port Louis, its capital city but traversing the length of the island from west to east, you can sense serenity in the land. There are beautiful hills and great beaches in Mauritius.
Flic En Flac Beach
Mauritius Island is only 45 km in width and 65 km in length and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean. It boasts of great beaches with fine white sand. I happened to stay around Flic En Flac Beach which is one of Mauritius's top beaches.
There are many beach resorts but not that many tourists and visiting it while it is still unspoilt seems like a good thing.
The Airport
Its airport known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport is located on the eastern end of the island while its capital city is located on the western end.
