The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center was established in 1959 to provide an emergency relief to Tibetan refugees who had come through a hazardous trek over the Himalayas into India. Production of handicrafts is the center's main activity.
Entering the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center is like going back a few decades in time. I was really fascinated by the way they keep traditional artisanship alive.
A man making needle holders
A woman knitting a hat.
A woman making thread from wool.
They were delighted to be photographed.
Hand-made paper and paintings.
An artist at work.
A woman weaving fabric.
The refugees' quarters.
The finished handicrafts are displayed in a showroom and visitors can help support them by purchasing the items which are fixed priced.
This is one of the best places I've visited in Darjeeling.
