I took pains to choose hotels which could meet all my criteria while holidaying in Tasmania. Because of the currency exchange factor (1AUD = RM2.90) a "cheap and good" hotel in Tasmania may not be that "cheap" for a Malaysian like me. While I could get good low range hotels in Malaysia for around RM100- RM150, I have to fork out three times more for a similar range of hotels in Tasmania. I stayed in two hotels in Hobart and Customs House Hotel was one of my picks. The room is modest but it didn't really matter as I was out most of the day. The location however, is deal and staying here has saved me a lot of money on transportation to places in my itinerary list.
Customs House Hotel was built in 1846 and it is a heritage-listed hotel. It is located on the waterfront in the Sullivan's Cove Precinct in Hobart's CBD. Its main asset is of course its location as it is within short walking distance to Hobart's major attractions.
Our flight into Hobart was very early and we arrived at the hotel a bit too early
(8.30am). We were hoping there would be a vacant room but as expected there was none. The official check-in time is 1pm but the friendly receptionist told us to try checking-in again at 11am just in case they could get a room ready by then. Anyway, the hotel did provide room for storage of our luggage while we went out to explore the nearby places.
Our room is a Double Room on the first floor. It comes with a queen and a twin bed and it actually sleeps three. The setting is rather modest but it has the basic facilities that we needed and more importantly, an en suite bathroom. The room comes with a heater, a table fan, a TV, a mini-bar, coffee and tea facilities and free Wifi. There is no safety box though.
The table is very small and and the space is rather cramped.
There is no closet for clothes, just an open-air hanging space for a few pieces.
The washroom comes with a semi-partitioned shower cubicle and the entire floor gets quiet wet after a shower.
Toiletries provided are basic.
The hotel does provide an elevator to the upper floors. By the way smoking is not allowed in all the rooms.
Available at the hotel bar is a good selection of brewery.
The hotel restaurant is an award winning restaurant and is quite well-known for its seafood.
All accommodation comes with a cooked breakfast. Even though the choice is limited, the quality is commendable.
The Egg Benedict was super yummy.
The Smoked Salmon & Brie Quiche was equally tantalizing.
