Finland Part 13: Getting To Know Rovaniemi


Rovaniemi was still covered with snow when I visited it in March. Located just 10km south of the Artic Circle Rovaniemi is known to have long, cold and snowy winters but short summers. Anyway I was fortunate enough to be staying in a hotel right at the city centre giving me ample opportunity to explore the streets of the city.
Rovaniemi is the administrative capital and commercial centre of Finland's northernmost province, Lapland. It is also the official hometown of Santa Claus.
Since it is the gateway to the Artic, it is a popular tourist destination for those who want to hunt the elusive northern lights as well as to indulge in winter activities like husky and reindeer safaris. More glimpses of the city can be seen below.

The most prominent landmark of Rovaniemi is The Jätkänkynttilä Bridge or Lumberjack Candle Bridge measuring 320 metres across Kemijoki River.
