When I arrived at Elgin Nor-Khill Hotel in Gangtok, I was expecting to see the same Tudor charm exhibited by Elgin Darjeeling. I was in for a surprise as Elgin Nor-Khill is not only oriental, it has a setting and decor-tyle that is vintage and somewhat 'buddhistical'.

This photo shows the hotel block that is annexed to the main building.
Elgin Nor-Khill is located on a hill slope. Just below it is the Paljor Stadium.
Above the hotel are apartments and a trunk road leading to the town centre. This flight of stairs with 70 steps connect the hotel to the trunk road.

The reception counter at the hotel lobby.
We were welcomed with cherry shandy and scarfs draped around our necks [just as in Elgin Darjeelin ]
The lobby lounge is exquisitely furnished with many sets of sofas.
Wall decors include Buddhist thankas and vintage pictures.
The lounge is furnished with elegant upholstered chairs, Sikkimese-design carpets, beautiful ceiling lamps and vintage cabinets with many statuettes of Buddha.

This fully carpeted stairs lead to the accommodation floors.
There is no lift in the hotel.

Our room
Our bedroom.
The room is equipped with a fan as it can be warm in the afternoons. There is a portable heater to heat up the room at night as the weather turns really cold after sunset.

The washroom is clean but not spacious. The toilet bowl, sink and vintage bath-tub are all cramped in a limited space. Water heater and hair dryer are available.
The basic bath amenities.
There are coffee and tea making facilities, complimentary mineral water, butter cookies and sachets of coffee and tea.
Our room is furnished with a few "chokse" tables - small tables which are intricately carved, painted and polished.

Just like Elgin Darjeeling, Elgin Nor-Khill, Gangtok also rears two lovely dogs.Overall, Elgin Nor-Khill is a lovely hotel. It is very near to town centre (20 minutes walk along a very steep road) but over exhibits of religious thankas may be a little offensive to some.
