Pulau Perhentian is very far from the Klang Valley but we prefer to drive as there is too much hassle checking in and out of airports. Furthermore the two nearest airports to Pulau Perhentian are not that near to the island.
We have to get to Kuala Besut, the jetty town in order to go to Pulau Perhentian.
There are two options if you drive from KL. One is to go through Kuantan and to use the coastal road. This option is about 80km further so needless to say, we chose the 2nd option which I've summarized below.
We left home very early as the journey was estimated to be around 7 hours. This is Bentong which you will pass through if you use this route.
You will also pass through Raub.
Taking this route was a good choice for us as we got to see towns which we have not seen before. Gua Musang is a beautiful town surrounded by limestone hills.
All these durians for only RM25 ?? This photo was taken on our journey home after our stay in Pulau Perhentian. At this particular roadside stall selling durians in Gua Musang, we stopped to eat some durians and took the remaining home - all for only RM25.
This route took us through a few states. From Selangor to Pahang to Kelantan and finally to our destination which is in Terengganu. This is Kuala Krai, a small town in Kelantan which we passed through.
We bypassed Machang and went through a section of Jertih.
We finally arrived at Kuala Besut. The entire journey took us slightly less than 7 hours with a few pit stops.
Other than a small stretch of newly constructed highway around Gua Muasang, most of the journey was on trunk roads which are not very wide but in good condition. The journey was slowed down on a few occasions due to slow moving vehicles especially lorries. Other than this, the journey was rather pleasant.
Kuala Besut
Getting there by plane
Many foreigners opt for flights from KL. The two nearest airports are Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Bahru and Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu. Even though flight time from KL to both these airports are more or less the same (approx 1 hour), the distance from Kota Bahru to Kuala Besut (58.4 km) is nearer compared to the distance from Kuala Terengganu (93km) to Kuala Besut. The better option would then be the Kota Bahru airport as travel time and taxi fare would be lower.
