Moscow's St Basil Cathedral got me bedazzled but there is a monument in St Petersburg that bears resemblance to it. This heritage building called Church of Savior With Spilled Blood (aka Resurrection Of Christ Cathedral ) is equally phenomenal and intriguing. When I first saw it, the jaw kind of dropped and the eyes popped out. It is another fairytale-like building that just blew my mind away!
I am a fan of structures with unique and creative architecture (even though architecture is never a part of my career) and I can spend a couple of hours gaping and admiring at one but we were given time just enough to take photographs. That's the main reason I dislike joining a group tour. When you are just getting exited, you have to leave and when you are bored stiff, you have to stay.
I believe understanding the history behind its construction will personify its charm so let me summarise what I've learnt. This church was built from year 1883-1907 by Tsar Alexander III as a memorial for his father Tsar Alexander II who was assassinated. The church stands on the exact spot where the assasination took place in 1881. The best architects and artists were commissioned to built the church and though it was then the 19th century, Tsar Alexander III specified that the architecture and design has to be "purely Russian of the 17th century style". The end result is electrifying but the emperor who commissioned its building died before it was completed.
The church is paved with ornately detailed mosaics and every part of the building is intricately designed. The cupolas are multi colored, and multi patterned and all the visible surfaces are lavishly adorned.
This church is located on the embankment of Griboyedov Canal and a good diagonal view of the church can be seen from across the canal.
The Details
Knowing that I didn't have the time to appreciate the beautiful details there, I took many photos so that I can slowly admire them at home at my own leisure. Do enjoy these details.
