Where To Stay In Sapa & Review Of Sapa Unique Hotel

Where To Stay In Sapa
I take pains in choosing my accommodation whenever I plan my own trip abroad. Unless I am checking into a resort hotel just to enjoy its surrounds and facilities, the hotel location is always a foremost criterion in my choice of any accommodation. I'll avoid hotels in secluded area far from the hub of town and my preference is to stay near where all the activities are centred.

These are the four criteria set in choosing my Sapa hotel.
1. Location: In town centre
2. Location: A short walking distance from Sapa Express bus station
(We took Sapa Express Bus from Hanoi to Sapa)
3. Room View: Overlooking the mountains of Sapa
4. Price: Reasonable

There are over a hundred hotels in Sapa and though it is possible to explore the entire town on foot, certain areas are more convenient to stay than others. For example, the areas around Sapa Market or Sapa Lake is a little too far from the centre of activities. Staying in the lower half of Fansipan St, or Muong Hoa Road may be a challenge because of the steep gradient as well as distance to the hub of town. The recommended list of location within the hub are: Dong Loi Rd, Tue Tinh Rd, Cau May St, Pham Xuan Huan Rd, Upper half of Fansipan St, the stretch of Muong Hoa Rd going into town ( Muong Hoa Road is a very long road that winds into the outskirt) and Hamrong Mountain Rd.

I've never considered room views a priority in my quest for hotels but staying in Sapa was an exception. I only wanted a room with mountain view as Sapa is famous for its mountains. Not all Sapa town hotels offer rooms with mountain views though. As Sapa is an undulating land, hotels built near the cliffs or on land with higher altitude may have rooms overlooking the mountains. Hotels occupying a high-rise premise may also offer such views. Patrons will normally have to pay extra for rooms with mountain views. Among hotels that offer rooms with mountain views are Amazing Hotel, Chapa Dew, Chaulong Sapa, Phuong Nam Hotel, Sapa Unique Hotel and many more.

The list becomes narrower as I put in criteria 2 and 4 and that was how I ended choosing Sapa Unique Hotel.

Sapa Unique Hotel Review
Sapa Unique Hotel is just a small hotel along the upper quarter of Fansipan Street. Its location which is just 200 meters from Sapa Express Bus pick-up and drop-off point, was one of the reasons I picked this hotel. Staying here I saved a lot on transportation as it is close to Cat Cat Village and within walking distances to other Sapa town attractions. There are also countless restaurants and eateries within a 1 km radius around it.
This hotel is run by a very nice guy, Mr Viet Le and his partners. It doesn't come with a swimming pool, spa or fitness centre but more than compensating for all these are genuine hospitality, sincerity and generosity. Viet is friendly and helpful and we became instant friends.
I paid extra for a room with mountain view and the room more than met my expectation. Even though it doesn't come with many stars attached to it, the facilities provided are commendable. There is water boiling facilities, fast WiFi, mini fridge, hair dryer, bedside tables, working table, a balcony, complimentary bottled water, and sachets of tea and coffee. We were given welcome drinks  and on a few occasions, free desserts were brought to our room.
This grilled bananas are one of those treats from Viet.

The room and bathroom are clean with daily housekeeping service.
It is worthwhile paying extra for this room with a mountain view. The balcony is my favorite hangout in the room.

This is the view from my room balcony. I could see Sapa town and the mountains and valleys beyond.
I could also see the rice terraces. This is a zoomed shot!
My room comes with breakfast. Patrons can choose any two types of food and any two types of beverages listed in the breakfast menu. Some of the choices available and the ones we ate are displayed here.

The food is simple but rather satisfying.
During days when the hotel has full occupancy, you may get to enjoy a breakfast buffet.

The hotel also arranges private tours or budget group tours for its patrons. We took the Bac Ha Market tour for USD 12pp and Muong Hoa Valley Trekking with lunch for USD15 pp. Overall staying at Sapa Unique Hotel was a wonderful experience.
And Mr Viet Le, if you are reading this, I would like to say Thank You for making our stay such a pleasant one.
