An Excursion To South America: 25. El Calafate, Argentina

El Calafate is located towards the southern tip of Argentina approximately 3000 km from Buenos Aires. Traversing Argentina from the north to the south we experienced obvious changes in climate as the land mass of Argentina is rather elongated stretching from the central part of South America to the southern tip of it. It was hot in Iguazu, cool in Buenos Aires and cold in El Calafate.
We have come to El Calafate to visit its magical glaciers, the Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park which is about 80km from the town. El Calafate on its own is stunning. This town was founded in 1927 and has a population of 17000. It lies at the base of Calafate Hill and sits on the southern shore of the Argentino Lake. The shimmering and glistening lake, the snow capped peaks, the tranquil ambiance and unspoilt beauty are real treats for nature lovers.

The houses in its residential areas are also a sight to behold as most are cheerful looking, vibrantly colorful with many having V-shaped roofs.

El Calafate is named after a thorny bush found in abundance in the province. This bush (Berberis buxifolia) has yellow flowers in spring and yields edible purple berries in summer. It is believed that if you eat the berries here you will return to El Calafate in time to come. I spotted some charming yellow flowers on this tree but this is not the tree after which El Calafate is named.
