An Excursion To South America: 15. A Taste Of Cuzco @ Tunupa Restaurant

I don't always like a restaurant because the food is tasty even though that is usually the main criterion when evaluating one. There is this restaurant in Cuzco which I think is authentically Cuzco. Even though I wouldn't rate Tunupa's food as excellent, it has an ambiance that I truly enjoyed.
Tunupa is located at Plaza de Armas, the main city square of Cuzco. It occupies a premise on the first floor which faces the square directly. The veranda part of the restaurant has a floor to roof glass window which offers an unhindered view over the garden and vintage buildings of the square. This is the best and most ideal place to dine within the restaurant but the sitting arrangement here caters only for diners that come in pairs or small groups.
Even though diners who sit inside may not get to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the beautiful square and the landscape beyond, there is a rustic charm and ambiance to savor in this interior part of the restaurant as well.

Tunupa offers a la carte and buffets meals. I was there for its buffet lunch.
The cuisines here are said to be a fusion of Peruvian flavours. There was a commendable spread of appetizers, desserts and other dishes including rice and pastas. Food presentation was excellent and actually look nicer than they taste! That in itself is a good start before any meal.

There were assorted curries including alpaca curry. It is always exciting to see and taste unfamiliar food. The food in Tunupa is interesting because most look unique and are unfamiliar to me.
The food may not be that delectable according to my taste buds  but I presume these are local flavours that suit the palette of the local people.

While in Peru you have to try its traditional dish called Cuy or Guinea pig. This is a delicacy often served during important festivals. They have it here at Tunupa, the crispy guinea pig complete with its head, legs and eyes. The taste needs getting used to but it was fun trying alpaca and guinea pig for the first time.
There was a variety of sweet desserts which the sweet toothed may enjoy.
Authentic Peruvian drinks like Pisco Sour, Inca Cola and coca tea are available in Tunupa.
The musicians who entertain the diners played their instruments like pros. I particularly like the sound of pan flutes which was played by one of the musicians. This sound really complements the rustic ambiance of the place. They even sell their own CDs to interested patrons.
