Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina, is one of the 48 glaciers of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Along with the Northern Patagonian Ice Field in southern Chile, these existing ice fields are remnants of the last Ice Age dating back 18,000 years, during which time all of southern Chile and Argentina were covered in thick sheets of ice.

We started our glacier excursion at Los Glaciares National Park by boarding a boat. The duration of this boat cruise called Nautical Safari was approximately an hour. We navigated Argentino Lake and cruised to the site where the southern wall of Perito Moreno Glacier could be viewed at close range. There was ample opportunity to marvel at this natural wonder during the cruise.
We took the morning trip which started around 10.30am. The pier was a very serene place and I was glad it was not thronged with big crowds.
Perito Moreno Glacier which is located 80km from El Calafate, is considered by many to be the 8th natural wonder of the world. This glacier park was declared A UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
This is one of only three glaciers in the world that grows rather than retreat, growing at an average rate of two meters each day. It is named after Francisco Moreno, a 19th century explorer who played an important role in protecting and defending Argentina’s territory in the border conflict with Chile.
The spectacle was beyond words to describe. It was an awesome experience and one that will create an everlasting impression.
The vista was one that seemed to come out of a dream.
It looked surreal yet it is real.
As we cruised back to the pier, I marveled at the surrounds. Floating icebergs of varying sizes, beautiful hills, gorgeous lake, natural rock formation and a charming alpine vegetation.
This is definitely the most amazing cruise of my life.
