An Excursion To South America: (Pt 30) Pictures Of El Calafate Town

El Calafate is a small Argentinian town that serves a small population. It is located near the southern tip of Argentina and is fairly close to the border with Chile. The only reason tourists fly all the way here is probably to visit the famed Perito Moreno Glacier, located some 80km away.

The town though small, is self-contained. There are a number of shops and restaurants but business appeared sluggish and the town lacks robustness.

Exploring a town is always a good break from sightseeing and visiting its other tourist attractions. I spent an hour or so walking the streets of El Calafate town and have probably covered most of it. The town as a whole is well architectured and is pretty charming. Within the town centre are two shopping areas with very beautiful shops namely El Paseo de los Artesanos and Aldea de los Gnomos. In El Paseo de los Artesanos you can find hand carved wooden objects, silver jewelry and items made of alpaca, as well as indigenous clothing created by the Tehuelche and Mapuche tribes. In Aldea de los Gnomos you can find several shops selling arts and crafts, leather goods, wool clothing, and much more.

In most of the pictures that I took you can hardly see any people around. Perhaps that's the beauty of El Calafate town!
