Cappadocia is a region in Turkey where you can find many cave hotels. I was really excited when I knew I would be staying in one as I have never done so before.
We arrived after a long journey from Pamukkale in time for dinner. We were put up in Ortahisar Cave Hotel, which is located in Ortahisar, a small ancient town in Cappadocia. There was no grand entrance, no spectacular sign board, no reception lobby and because the hotel is nestled in the midst of a laid back village with small roads, our bus could not drive right up to the entrance. We had to drag our luggage 80 meters or so through a winding and undulating path to reach the place. In spite of its location, it is just a couple of hundred meters away from the town centre.
Ortahisar Hotel is set in a restored cave which is said to date back to the 11th century. There are only 9 rooms with 6 more in the making. There are only two rooms on the upper level and I stayed in one of them. [Most of the caves in Cappadocia are man-made, meaning they are dug out of natural and towering rocks formed over thousands of years.]
I was happy to be staying on the upper level but because there is no elevator, carrying the heavy luggage could be a challenge. I was blessed though as I had Ronnie around.
Surprisingly my room was very spacious. The ceiling and walls have been paved and plastered to make them flat leaving no jagged edges. A fruit platter and bottled water were complementary items provided by this hotel.
There is a tiny window, a make-do wardrobe and ample space for the luggages.
The washroom is equally spacious and is fitted with hair dryer, water heater and a jacuzzi bath tub.
There is a small but cozy dining room and annexed to it is the kitchen.
There is a small garden in the centre which could have been better if a little more effort is put in landscaping it.
This hotel will also be well remembered as one where we experienced 2 different seasons over a span of 3 days. It was spring when we arrived. The weather took an unexpected turn and it started snowing heavily on our last day so it felt like winter.
Ortahisar Cave Hotel may not be the best cave hotel in Cappadocia but the experience of staying here is certainly unforgettable.
