Goreme Open Air Museum Photo Gallery

One of the most popular tourist destination in Cappadocia is Goreme Open Air Museum. Set in a vast landscape of mountain ridges, valleys and bizzare rock pillars called fairy chimneys this attraction which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site features ancient cave churches and monasteries that date back to the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries. These structures which were dug and carved out of soft rocky hills formed over the millennials, together with the frescoes that decorate their walls are still amazingly well preserved. Moving from one cave church to another and panting as I went along as they are located at such elevated levels was like going back in time. I couldn't help but marvel at the lifestyle of the people who once roamed, worshipped and dwelled in this place.
