Topkapi Palace is one of Istanbul's top tourist destination. Built in 1461 during the Ottoman Empire, this palace turned museum has been listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For 400 years Topkapi Palace was the main residence of the Ottoman Sultans who ruled over Turkey. Soon after the Ottoman Empire came to an end, the palace was converted into a museum. Walking around the palace ground is a good opportunity to catch glimpses into the opulent lifestyle of the sultans who once resided here.
The palace is built on a hilly land by the shore of Bosphorus Strait. It a very huge complex consisting of four major courtyards, a number of gardens, pavilions and many individual buildings each serving its purpose. It is surrounded by a wall and there are a few grand looking gates. Visiting Topkapi Palace requires an entrance fee and the queue to view the exhibits in some of the monuments can be insanely long. Even though a big part of the palace is out of bound for visitors, a lot of walking still has to be done as the palace ground is really expansive.
