The underground cities were used in the ancient times as hideouts by Christians who needed to protect themselves from the Roman soldiers (during the Roman Era), the Mongolians and then the Muslim Arabs (during the Ottoman Era).
These underground cities which were incredibly dug out from the soft volcanic rocks to form a maze of tunnels, passages, rooms and stairways and equipped with kitchen, ventilation shaft, wells, winery, store rooms, etc. are well concealed from the outside world.
I visited a smaller one located in the midst of a very laid back village.
