Balkan Travel Part 14: [Croatia] The Charms Of Dubrovnik

I spent 2 relaxing days in Dubrovnik and for the first time since I arrived in the Balkans I felt like I was on a real vacation. I stayed in a nice hotel with a huge spread of breakfast and dinner cuisines, there was no rush and no long travelling hours on the road, the itinerary was well spaced and I had ample opportunities to appreciate and savour the charms of this fascinating city at a leisurely pace. Dubrovnik is the first destination I visited in Croatia and believe me, it is incredibly beautiful.

There are a few interesting facts about this city which are enlightening to know.

1.  Dubrovnik is totally cut off from mainland Croatia as it is entirely bordered by the Adriatic Sea and two neighbouring Balkan Nations. It is mostly bordered by Bosnia Herzegovina except for the southernmost part where it is bordered by Montenegro. This means you will need to go through Bosnia Herzegovina to get to the other parts of Croatia.

2.  The hit American fantasy drama series, "Game Of Thrones" was mostly filmed in Dubrovnik making this already popular city even more famous.

3. Dubrovnik is a walled city and the walls which serve as a defence has never been breached. The history of the walls is said to date back to the 7th century. Measuring 1,940 metres in length and reaching a maximum height of 25 metres these walls wind around the old town of Dubrovnik which is located by the sea shores. Dubrovnik is most famous for its walls which together with the old town have been enlisted a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Since Dubrovnik is a coastal city with many islands off its shores, the sea is part and parcel of its enchanting landscapes. Below are some mesmerizing panoramas I took while travelling around. The scenery especially the ones taken along the coastal roads are really mind blowing.
