Balkan Travel Part 22: Bled Castle And Lake Bled, Slovenia

"Čudovito, Avdihujoče In Nepozaben! " is what I would tell a Slovenian about his country if I ever met one.
These three Slovenian words which translated to English means "Beautiful, Inspiring and Unforgettable" are what I would describe Slovenia, the 8th and the last Balkan State that I visited. It is a country that shares its border with the much-hyped-about Italy, Austria and Hungary but one that is seldom given the limelight. Though not half as glamorous as its neighbours, Slovenia boasts of dramatic panoramas, mind blowing landscapes, unforgettable vistas and visiting Slovenia is an awesome experience for me.

My first destination in Slovenia was Bled, a resort town located at the foothills of the Julian Alps. At the centre of Bled lies a beautiful glacial lake called Lake Bled and at the centre of Lake Bled  lies a cute little island called Bled Island. Bled has all the elements that make a charming town; mountains, lake, island and ambiance which are nothing but allure. It is certainly a place worthy of a visit.
Bled's attractions centers around Lake Bled but people who have come to see the beautiful lake would usually also visit Bled Castle from where a good view of Lake Bled and Bled Island can be seen. Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia being built as early as the 12th century. This medieval castle is a prominent landmark which can be seen from afar as it is perched on a tall 130 meter rocky cliff that rises from Lake Bled.
A short hike up a steep pathway is inevitable as the castle is located at an elevated altitude.

Walking around the castle compound is like walking back in time as the castle is more than 1000 years old.
The castle ground features two courtyards. The lower courtyard with some outbuildings including a restaurant, a souvenir shop and a very old well.

The upper level features a chapel with beautiful frescoes, a museum that displays some medieval antiques and residence.

What impresses most are the enchanting scenery that surrounds the castle.
The reward for visitors to the castle is an unhindered view of the serene Lake Bled  and its surrounding villages, the alps and the island in the middle of the lake.
